Nickel Alloy Coating
Relevance:
As per an autonomous Research and Development Centre of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), a new method of deposition of Nickel alloy coatings on engineering-grade materials can replace environmentally toxic chrome plating.
About Chrome Plating:
- Deposition of thin layer of chromium on a metal surface using an electroplating process.
- Properties of Chromium layer – Highly reflective; Provides hard and durable surface; Resistant to corrosion.
- The process involves the use of hexavalent chromium, which is a known human carcinogen.
- Uses – Automotive parts, Domestic and industrial applications.
- Health effects – Respiratory problems, skin irritation, risk of lung cancer when inhaled etc.
About Nickel Alloy Coating:
- It provides a unique combination of corrosion and wear resistance that brightness, luster and appeal.
- It provides excellent adhesion properties for subsequent coating layers.
- Features of new method –
- Deposition of novel nanostructured Nickel alloy coatings.
- Uses electric current in the form of pulses (Pulsed current electroplating)
- Nickel – Often used as an ‘undercoat’ for other coatings, such as chromium.
- Applications – Used on aircraft and aerospace components, automotive parts, food processing equipment (non-stick) etc.
