Relevance:

A report by PAN (Pesticide Action Network) has pointed that several states are using above the recommended amount of certain pesticides.

About:

  • India’s pesticides regulator – Central Insecticides Board and Registration Committee
  • The board has approved specific uses of agrochemicals. But state agriculture departments and industries recommended the 4 chemicals for more crops than their approved use, the study found.
  • Reported Pesticides are:
  • The highly hazardous pesticides (HHP) are approved for use in the country for only specific crop-pest combinations. The study found that they are being used for several food and non-food crops without approval.

Note: Anupam Verma Committee recommendations – 18 pesticides were banned by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare through Pesticides (Prohibition) Order, 2018.

Pesticide Action Network (PAN):

  • An international coalition of around 600 NGOs, citizens’ groups, and individuals in about 60 countries.
  • Function: opposes pesticide use, and advocates what it proposes as more ecologically sound alternatives.
