Relevance:

Baguette (the staple French bread) included under UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list.

Key Points:

  • Intangible cultural heritage is the practices, expressions, knowledge and skills that communities, groups and sometimes individuals recognise as part of their cultural heritage.
  • As per UNESCO, intangible cultural heritage includes oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals etc.
  • 3 criteria for ICHL –
    • Entity recognized by communities, groups and, individuals as part of their cultural heritage
    • Be transmitted from generation to generation & be constantly recreated by communities
    • Provide them with a sense of identity and continuity.

UNESCO’s Convention for Safeguarding the Intangible Heritage:

  • Adopted in 2003 and entered into force in 2006.
  • Composition –
    • 24 Members
    • Elected in the General Assembly
    • Term of office: 4 years
  • Publications –
    • Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
    • List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.
    • Register of good safeguarding practices.
